39 While 39

I had a very successful year, but a very unsuccessful 39 While 39.  In truth, I never even finished making the list.  I knew what I wanted my 39th goal to be, but I never came up with goal #38.  Wanna see?

1. Start grad school. (Cheat!  I totally signed up for my first class before my birthday.)
2. Check in with my Goals Girls every week.
3. Lose enough weight to zip up the unzippable dresses.
4. Or…take the unzippable dresses to Goodwill.
5. Publicize this very blog!
6. Host a tea party.
7. Make angels out of Grandma’s wedding dress.
8. Buy and wear one outfit that scares me.
9. Gather plates, cutting boards, lights, etc to improve my food photography.
10. Take some beautiful pictures of food. Submit them to FoodGawker, DessertStalking, Tasteologie, or similar.
11. Make pillows with my fabulous fabric from Mood.
12. Make Tina’s tutu!
13. Watch more ESPN. (Seriously. This is good for my career!)
14. Take my vitamins.
15. Complete my allergy shot treatment. (I’d really, really like to quit early. But, I’ve come this far, I will not quit now!)
16. Run another 10K.
17. Run another half marathon.
18. Take advantages of opportunities to advance my career.
19. Watch all of the 2012 Oscar Best Picture Nominees. (I’ve only seen four of the 10 from 2011.)
20. Perform for Get Mortified.
21. Go on vacation.
22. Go on at least six photo walks…preferably with Jeanne.
23. Ride my bike…at least once.
24. Attend at least one blogging class, conference, or meet up.
25. Go scuba diving.
26. Give to Goodwill any clothing item that hasn’t been worn in the past three years. (Except, maybe, special occasion dresses!)
27. Finally see the Cabazon dinosaurs, baby!
28. Request access to the basketball court inside the Matterhorn.
29. Cut back on the caffeine.
30. Create at least one new recipe from scratch.
31. Eat “paleo” for one week!
32. Visit a state I’ve never visited before.
33. Try at least one food I think I hate. (Maybe I don’t hate it anymore!)
34. Buy and use a real face cream.
35. Clean out all three closets.
36. Make someone’s day…anonymously, if possible.
37. Pitch at least five freelance stories. (Radio, print, web, sports, food, life, whatever!)
38.

And, finally…stolen from my friend, Tiffany, who also turns 40 this year:

39. Turn 40 with a joyful, positive outlook on life!

Yeah, I didn’t do all that.  I didn’t even manage half of it.  Still…wanna see all the amazing things I did?

Whew...I'm getting tired just looking at it all!

Whew…I’m getting tired just looking at it all!

Yeah, pretty cool.  So, I decided to make up a list of things of 39 things I accomplished while I was 39.   It wasn’t difficult!

1. Started grad school.
2. Applied, was accepted, and officially enrolled in a Master’s degree program.
3. Checked in with my Goals Girls every week. (Or….almost every week? Close enough!)
4. Attended at least one game in each of the four major leagues.  (Yeah, I’m a sports reporter, but things are a little different in public radio.  This is the first time in my life I’ve ever done that!)
5. Publicized this very blog!
6. Hosted a tea party.
7. Hosted a New Year’s Eve party.
8. Bought and wore cowboy boots… Yes, cowboy boots! And an outfit to match!
9. Gathered plates, cutting boards, lights, etc to improve my food photography.
10. Took some beautiful pictures of food. Some of them were published in the Boston Globe!
11. Danced at a good friend’s wedding. (Two weddings, actually!)
12. Drank my way around the world…Disney World, that is. (Should I admit to that?)
13. Watched more ESPN.  (But I should have watched even more.)
14. Got a photography lesson from a real-life food photographer.
15. Learned to self-administer my allergy shots.  (Eeek!  It freaks me out and I always have an epi-pen handy, but it’s better than sitting in the doc’s office.)
16. Rehabbed an injury that kept me from running another 10K and half marathon.
17. Ran a crazy 5K instead
18. Took advantages of opportunities to advance my career. (Seriously, I should get extra credit for this one.)
19. Went to my first Fireman’s ball. (Okay, it was officially an Emergency Services gala, but I’ll take it!)
20. Learned to make truffles. (Who’d have thunk it?)
21. Went on vacation…three times. Whew!
22. Went on a few photo walks with Jeanne. Not enough. I could always use more of those!
23. Visited the Baseball Hall of Fame.
24. Attended my first food writing conference.
25. Went scuba diving…three times. Again, do I get extra credit?
26. Gave to Goodwill any clothing item that hadn’t been worn in the past three years. (Except those special occasion dresses!)
27. Finally saw the Cabazon dinosaurs, baby!
28. Requested access to the basketball court inside the Matterhorn. (Didn’t get in, but I gave it a good try.)
29. Cut back on the caffeine. (Yeah, and then I ramped back up again.)
30. Created multiple recipes from scratch. (Where’s my extra credit?)
31. Covered a hurricane. Not that I really wanted to…but I did it. I voiced live radio updates from the scene of the storm and everything! (Luckily, the storm wasn’t so bad here in Massachusetts.)
32. Visit a COUNTRY I’ve never visited before. (That’s better so much better than just seeing a new state!)
33. Tried at least one food I thought I hated. (Conch. I ate conch. And it was good!)
34. Bought a real face cream. (And then I realized it didn’t have sunscreen. I meant to take it back, but I never did. Keep in mind this goal is vastly complicated by my allergy issues.)
35. Cleaned out all three closets. (I’m cheating a little here. The third closet wasn’t cleaned out until the second week of my 40th year.)
36. Went apple picking. (I love picking apples.)
37. Pitched (and published) at least five freelance stories. (Four Boston Globe stories and one awesome feature on NPR’s All Things Considered. Take that, goals list!!!)
38. Started a new side career as a food writer. (Take that, goal #38!!!)

And, finally…stolen from my friend, Tiffany, who also turns 40 this year:

39. Turn 40 with a joyful, positive outlook on life!

Yeah, so I didn’t do everything I planned. But, look again at Accomplishment #38.

Seriously…a whole new career totally makes up for not sewing up a few throw pillows. Maybe I’ll get around to that this year. Then again…maybe not.

I have a new plan for my 40 While 40 list.  It’s going to be cool.  Stay tuned…
